Great British Garden Designers Rosemary Verey

Rosemary Verey is one of Britain’s most renowned garden designers and author of many fascinating books on garden design. An admirer of the traditional English garden, she designed her own garden at Barnsley House, near Gloucestershire. This spectacular garden evolved over many years, taking on early 16th and 17th style features, fitting sumptuously in to the classical revival style. It was from working hard on her design principles and carving out her own bespoke style which would see her designs heralded by many for years to come. Her first book, ‘The Englishwoman’s Garden became a huge success shining a light on garden design synonymous with her unique design elements.

Her design principles were bold and eclectic with traditional design elements fused within. She believed in creating vistas, letting the design lead the eye carefully through each and every segment of the design, ensuring one area blends ornately in to the next. A master at adapting large towering design features, most commonly at home to many a grand country estate, she carefully blended in these immense features and scaled down to beautifully nestle in to her home garden designs. The spectacular Laburnum Walk showcases this very masterful idea, where wisteria’s drape from above. Beautiful violet laburnums pop up alongside the borders creating linear form and structure guiding you through to the pavilion set alongside the lily pool.

Verey’s garden designs were framed within a formal framework, featuring manicured hedging and evergreens, as part of her desire for a garden to be both enticing and enthralling throughout all the seasons. Evergreen hedging carved out shapes, softening some of the bolder features in her designs alongside her planting design featuring overflowing herbaceous perennials, magnificent dahlias and ornate traditional roses. Keen to revive the fashion of ornamental kitchen gardens inspired by a garden in France, Rosemary introduced the potager, an ornamental and productive vegetable plot with fruit and flowers. Creating a tunnel, courgettes and pumpkins proudly hung, surrounded by blossoming fruit trees in Spring with box beds of lush fresh salad and chard.

Rosemary Verey was a much loved gardening pioneer, best known for reviving the English Country garden style adored by many today. Clever use of design elements, creating vast vistas and viewpoints to appreciate the stunning surrounding landscape she combined formal style softened with ornate planting of classical herbaceous borders and rose hedges. A masterful tapestry of colour and scent were created within her designs for one’s senses to be enthralled as they wander through Verey’s magnificent charming garden designs.
